Solar Thermal

Photo of Hot Water Panels Hot Water Panels: Two Heliodyne liquid flat plate collectors will be used to provide the house with hot water for showers, clothes washing, and so on. A heat transfer fluid is circulated through the collectors where it absorbs energy from the sun. This heat is then transferred to the water in the storage tank.
Photo of Drainback Tank Drainback Tank: The pump shuts off at night and the fluid from the collectors drains back to the drainback tank, manufactured by Rheem. This prevents freezing of the heat transfer fluid in the collectors.
Photo of Thermal Storage Tank Thermal Storage Tank: stores the hot water produced by the solar thermal system during the day for use at any time during the day or night. The storage tank, manufactured by Rheem, also has an electrical heating element that can be used to heat the water when energy from the sun in not sufficient.
Photo of Water Circulator Water Circulator: The hot water system is an active system, meaning that a pump is used to move water through the collectors. A 1/12 horsepower Grundfos pump circulates water up to the collectors on the roof and through the heat exchanger in the storage tank.
